Walking through mountains of snow
Gleiwitz, Death march
18 januari 1945
Everywhere we walked we left behind dead bodies.
On 18 January the Russians were so close to Auschwitz that the command for general evacuation was issued. Anyone who could still walk had to leave. It was 22 degrees below zero. People had only their threadbare prisoner’s clothes and were walking on wooden shoes with iron laces. Only the sick remained behind. Many were murdered by the SS or died of their illness.
