It was pitch black there. You couldn’t see your hand in front of your face, and that’s where we went if we wanted to slip away unnoticed.

In the evaporator, carbon black was extracted from petroleum. Later in the process the carbon black landed in paper bags and was transported to another factory that used the carbon black as raw material in the manufacture of rubber.
