Sunday leave

Camp Conrad Rouveen
28 april – 9 augustus 1942

They didn’t know at what Jews were. For them we were unemployed men from the city who had been set to work.

The community of Staphorst was known as one of the most religious in the Netherlands and had a closed character. Sunday as a day of rest was strictly observed, and people went to church twice on Sunday. Services in the Protestant churches were very well attended. Women went to church in traditional costumes, holding their bible as they walked. Men and women walked in small groups, separated from each other.  The men wore wooden shoes.
