The southern part of the Netherlands – below the great rivers – was liberated in the fall of 1944. The northern part wasn’t liberated until the spring of 1945, after what is now known as the Hunger Winter. On 17 March 1945 the American army occupied Koblenz; Bonn was already in American hands.
